We didn’t think

Charlotte Alexander

We didn't think the sky could get any bigger

but Montana stretched out like a book

opened so far back we creased the spine

so endless that it seemed to fill a cup

so full of water it spilled over the rim

and if I laid down in the grass I still think

it would've swallowed me in a single sip

Everything was pale and yet

everywhere we looked we found new color

magenta in the mountains

the ground blue and green and golden

so golden that the hay glowed

like a halo and we were made holy by the hills

those rolling hills that could've taken us anywhere

We drove 70mph but it felt like stillness

sunflowers lined the roads and all we could do

was say look! Look! Look!
